Throughout the United States, there are no clearly defined national standards for low voltage outdoor lighting. In most states, the test given to license low voltage contractors has little or nothing to do with the actual work that they perform. AOLP feels this lack of standards has a profound impact on the safety and quality of services that we provide.
AOLP has created a standardized certification test to address the lack of standards that presently exist. The Certified Low Voltage Lighting Technician (CLVLT) exam is administered by AOLP. The CLVLT exam measures the knowledge and capabilities of the applicants and is specifically for 12-volt systems.
The test consists of six (6) sections that include written and/or hands-on elements. There is no training prior to testing. Upon receipt and processing of registration and payment, a digital copy of the CLVLT Study Guide will be emailed to each registrant within two weeks. Students may fail up to three (3) sections and retake those sections the same day at a cost of $50 per section. If you fail more than three (3) sections, you must take the exam over at another date and will be required to pay the full registration amount again. Upon receiving a passing grade, applicants are listed as Certified Low Voltage Lighting Technicians (CLVLT). The certification is good for two (2) years at which time a renewal fee of $50 will be required along with a total of twelve (12) CECs. This exam is for experienced technicians and should not be taken lightly. AOLP’s goal is to help each participant become certified so it is strongly encouraged to study the materials. In addition, there will be a study session the morning of the exam. For those who want additional opportunities to prepare for the exam, a list of registered participants will be shared with those who register and AOLP will offer a one-hour video study session prior to the exam.
Attention current CLVLTs! You will receive renewal notices and reminders from the AOLP office when it’s your year to renew. Click here for more information on how to maintain your CLVLT.
