Summer Issue: Four Simple Closing Strategies for More Profitable Sales
July 6, 2018Summer Issue: Safety on the Job
July 6, 2018How long have you worked in the outdoor lighting industry, and what do you do in your current position?
For the past 10 years, I have been the owner of Northwest Outdoor Lighting. Since “everything” is too much of a blanket statement, I’ll break down a few of the positions I have held. Being the first point of contact for our clients, I try to educate and communicate a clear sense of lighting design and service we can offer. All this is done via phone, email or face-to-face contact. I design computer schematics for each project, follow up on invoicing, maintain schedule and, occasionally, you’ll find me installing with my crew.
Why did you go into this industry?
I was encouraged to enter this industry by my husband who was a consultant for a lighting manufacturing company and knew I would excel at running our own business. I’ve enjoyed meeting great clients and having another area of creativity to explore.
What’s been a key to your success in this industry over the years?
I believe my clear communication and excellent customer service is only enhanced by our fabulous lighting designs and installs.
What is a project or two that you’ve done that you’re especially proud of, and why?
I really love when a client allows us to design and install without any boundaries because they trust our judgment. The Woodinville project, for which we recently won an award from the Washington Association of Landscape Professionals, was great fun and looks stunning. Another award-winning project was Lake Stevens. They had this beautiful bear sculpture that, once illuminated, took on a whole new look at night!
Have you faced any industry-related challenges lately, and what have you done to overcome them?
I’ve had a few requests to have motion-detected operation which I have yet to resolve. The LED-integrated fixtures I prefer do not work well with this type of control.
How long have you been an AOLP member?
This is my first year.
What do you find is the biggest benefit of being an AOLP member?
I hope to be able to learn from more experienced members and, of course, be proud of certification!
