The Barns at Wolf Trap is an iconic concert venue in Northern Virginia. The challenge of this project was that the client wanted the building to be uniformly lit without any scallops. We designed a prototype luminaire for this challenge. We used a traditional flood light with linear optics to give immediate spread at the base of the barn and project the light evenly to the top. This provided both an even horizontal spread with a vertical spread for an even wash. Due to the barn's age, the outer wall was uneven, challenging our team to mitigate hot spots throughout the surface. This required multiple evenings of adjustments to mitigate this challenge. The second phase was to highlight the landscaping and provide a safe entrance. We started with downlighting from 40'+ in the larger trees, creating lighting and shadows on the ground. We then offered the uplighting on the landscaping to soften the commercial feel of the space. We dimmed the existing bollards to an acceptable level. Our final touch was using four mini lights to highlight the weather vein on the top. Every light source selected was 97+ CRI, 3000k, and each luminaire required glare control using shrouds and hex-louvered lenses.
