Project Name: Johnson Creek Bridge

Our team illuminated this bridge and landscape around it. The bridge can be seen from the house, about 100 feet away. In wintertime, it gets dark at 5 p.m., and she walks her dog. She uses this bridge every day.

VFW Post 696 occupies a central space in Owensboro, Kentucky’s vibrant downtown riverfront, providing social activities, support functions, and memorial ceremonies for its members and their guests. One such activity is the daily ceremony playing Taps, saluting the flag, and honoring the memorial that remembers deceased members of the Post. This flag was previously illuminated only by one 120-volt spotlight mounted to the side of the building to comply with the Federal Flag Code.

To better illuminate the memorial, I triangulated three fixtures per flagpole, as the basis for the overall design, and implemented integrated linear wash lights with multiple diodes on the front and back of the monument to avoid the shadowing that would have occurred from using single source LEDs and optics. The complete installation included 31 fixtures, 21 4-inch cored holes, and extensive grinding and grouting to conceal the wiring, as running conduit was not an option.

The project was officially revealed during a Veterans Day ceremony attended by members of the Post and their guests, local media outlets, and local Boy Scout troops. This project was a meaningful way for me to give back to a community that has given so much for us all.
